Frequently Asked Questions- FAQ’s

Who is PT Mitratata Citragraha (PTMC) and our program, the ASEAN Project Manager’s Center of Excellence? (APMX)-

PTMC/APMX A Muslim women owned, small to medium sized company based in Jakarta, Indonesia with offices in Singapore, Amsterdam, Johannesburg and Anchorage, Alaska. We were the first “Center of Excellence” in project management in South East Asia, dating back to 1996.

What does PTMC/APMX do?

We have been in the training, consulting and project professional services business for 15+ years. Not only does PTMC/APMX do training, but we also provide project management professional services, including but not limited to construction inspection services (i.e. Telecommunications pre and post construction inspections), project controls (cost estimating, scheduling and earned value management) and setting up and training Project Management Offices (PMO’s)

What else can you tell us about PTMC/APMX?

We are NOT theoretical project managers. Because we are an entrepreneurial company, that actually puts our own money on the line doing real projects using “@risk” contracts, we “practice what we preach”. As a successful women owned entrepreneurial company,  we bridge the gap between book theory and what really works in the field;

Where does PTMC/APMX work?

We enjoy a regional reputation for excellence.  Not only do we work in South and Eastern Asia, Australia/New Zealand, the Middle East and Europe, but through our extensive network of like minded entrepreneurial professionals, PTMC/APMX is capable of delivering courses anywhere in the world;

What professional organization does PTMC/APMX support or endorse?

As PTMC/APMX is committed to building project management COMPETENCY, we do not subscribe to nor endorse any single professional organization, body of knowledge or methodology.  By remaining independent, we are able to identify and bring to our clients the “best practices” in asset, portfolio, program or project management wherever we may find them.  To realize our objective of remaining independant and impartial, PTMC/APMX  subscribes to five competing but complimentary Professional Organizations and their “Bodies of Knowledge” or “Methodologies”.

  1. Project Management Institute (PMI) “Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge” (PMBOK Guide)
  2. Association for the Advancement of Cost Engineering (AACE) “Total Cost Management Framework- Integrated Portfolio, Program and Project Management Methodology”
  3. International Council of Systems Engineering (INCOSE) “Body of Knowledge of Systems Engineering”
  4. Construction Management Association of America’s Construction Management Body of Knowledge.
  5. Global Alliance for Project Performance Standards (GAPPS) Open Source  Project and Program Management Competency Standards
  6. Institute for Asset Management (IAM) the UK’s BSI PAS 55:2008 standards and the IAM Competency Assessment.

Who is PTMC/APMX’s primary mentor?

PTMC/APMX has hired Dr. Paul D. Giammalvo, CDT, CCE, MScPM and for the past 15+ years, he has worked for PTMC in the role as our Senior Technical Advisor- Our “US Prime Beef”, developing and delivering most of our training courses. During this time, he has also developed our in house consulting capabilities as well as creating a “train the trainer” program designed to transfer technology to our local trainers.

Who is Dr. Paul D Giammalvo?

“Dr. PDG” is a well known and sometimes controversial project manager practitioner cum academic who is passionate about the practice of asset, portfolio, program and project management. He is one of only a handful of people in the world who:

  • holds a PhD in Project/Program Management from the Institute Superieur De Gestion Industrielle (ISGI) and Ecole Superieur De Lille (ESC-Lille) Lille, France, 2007. (Now SKERAM School of Business)
  • holds a Masters Degree in Project Management from the George Washington University Masters of Science in Project Management
  • holds a Bachelors Degree in Construction Project Management from Central New England and Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) AND;
  • has 40+ years of “hands on” field experience  in oil, gas and mining projects; General construction projects, including 20 years as a successful general contractor; Military (airbase, radar installations, tower installations)  AND;
  • has 20+ years of PROVEN experience teaching project and program management to English as Second Language (ESL) Mid Career Path ADULT learners
  • By specializing in creating and delivering Experiential based learning- “learn by doing”.

What is PTMC/APMX track record of success?

While PTMC has not, does not and will not “teach to the exam” we have trained over to 7,000 people in the past 15+ years to sit for the various certifications, including but not limited to the PMP.

We have a 15 year, running average first attempt PMP Exam pass rate of:

  • 86% for English as Second Language (ESL) practitioners
  • 99%+ for native/near native speakers of English

For the AACE Certifications we have a 20 year running first attempt pass rate of 80% and a 100% first attempt pass rate for the 2500 word paper required to pass the Certified Cost Consultant/Cost Engineer Exam.

What are the PTMC/APMX philosophies behind the Courses developed by Dr. PDG?

As noted previously, PTMC/APMX has not, does not and will not “teach to the exams”.  We do not believe cram courses intended primarily to help people pass the PMI, AACE, INCOSE, CMAA or any other exam contribute to improving the delivery of better projects and programs.  All PTMC/APMX courses are designed first and foremost to produce more COMPETENT practitioners.

To accomplish this objective, PTMC/APMX believes that, like driving a car or flying a plane or performing medical surgery, that you CANNOT learn about project management by reading books or by taking exams.  The ONLY way to learn about project management is by initiating, planning, executing, controlling and closing projects or programs.

What makes the PTMC/APMX courses different from nearly all the other training providers?

All PTMC/APMX courses are Experiential based, designed to enable participants to “test drive” the tools and techniques of APPLIED project management.

Why are the PTMC/APMX courses so long?

Because all our courses are experiential, in order to enable learning not only the tools and techniques such as cost estimating, planning or scheduling, we also need to teach the much more difficult and challenging soft skills- leadership, motivating, problem solving, conflict resolution, team building, making things happen. This CANNOT be accomplished in 5 or even 7 day “cram” courses.

IF PTMC/APMX does not support “teaching to the exam”, then what do you support?

PTMC/APMX has as our first priority, generating a favorable Return on Training Investment (RoTI) to the organization or entity paying for the course. Whether the attendees in our classes are paying for the training out of their own pocket or if the companies they work for are paying, PTMC/APMX first and foremost objective is for our graduates to be able to pay for that investment by becoming more COMPETENT practitioners.

What is PTMC/APMX’s definition of “competent”?

PTMC/APMX relies on the Merriam Webster’s Dictionary to define “competency” as being

“the quality or state of being functionally adequate, characterized by marked or sufficient aptitude + attitude + skills + strength + knowledge”

This definition drives the objectives in all our courses.  The PTMC/APMX course structures are heavily influenced by Dr. PDG’s Master’s degree from GWU as well as the Asset and Project Management courses he developed and taught at the Western Australia Universities Master of Science in Petroleum Engineering Blended Learning program and the Engineering Economics Course he developed and taught at ESC Lille University.

As changing behaviors and building skills takes a lot more time than simply transferring knowledge, all our courses are 90 to 180 days long, “blended learning”  programs.

What is the definition of “Blended Learning”?

“Blended Learning” is defined to be a combination of face to face and distance learning mode favorable to adult learners.
